Mpaa Rating : R Genre Movie :Horror"For God's sake, GET OUT!" was the ad campaign for the 1979 shocker The Amityville Horror. The film was based on the allegedly true story of the luckless Lutz family, who move lock, stock, and barrel into a new home, only to find that it is possessed by the demonic spirits of its previous owners. Variations of the Seven Deadly Plagues emanate from virtually every household fixture, while other forms of otherworldly mischief are suffered by the Lutz children. Enter kindly Father Delaney (Rod Steiger), who does his utmost to exorcise the house. The Amityville Horror was frequently greeted with laughs from its first-run audiences, especially after it was discovered that the "actual" events depicted in the film (based on a book by Jay Anson) were complete fabrications. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Joseph Proimakis-Movies for the Masses
It once seemed creepy, but time has made it seem pretty contrived.
Steve Crum-Video-Reviewmaster.com
A middling horror entry from 1979 that's a masterpiece when compared to the dreadful 2005 remake.
Chuck O'Leary-Fantastica Daily
Yeah, it's not good.
Stefan Birgir Stefansson-sbs.is
Moronic.
Nick Schager-Slant Magazine
worst of all is the gore, of which there really isn't any... that rare horror film that has a body count of zero
Christopher Null-Filmcritic.com
...certainly looks a whole lot better when compared to its sequels.
David Nusair-Reel Film Reviews
All hype, no substance.
Ken Hanke-Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)
Dated by todays standards, but still some effectively creepy moments.
Brian Mckay-eFilmCritic.com
It made HOW much?!
Rob Vaux-Flipside Movie Emporium
Dry, dumb and periodically somewhat dull ... but still packs enough of a haunted house whallop to warrant a skeptical visit.
Scott Weinberg-eFilmCritic.com
really more about the deep-seated, primal fear of family members inflicting violence on each other than it is about ghosts and demonic spirits.
James Kendrick-Q Network Film Desk
Strange and weird, yes. Scary, no.
John J. Puccio-Movie Metropolis
